My Guide to the Network and Telephone Color Code

A normal Telephone or Network cable pair, consists of two colors. Normally, these colors are White, and another color. The Tip conductor is a primarily white, with a color tracer. While the Ring conductor is primarily a color, with a white tracer.

The easy way to remember that is coloRING, because the ring is primarily the color.


This is the standard Color Code for Network and Telephone cabling. Not all cables use all the colors. This graphic is a quick way to remember the code. From top to bottom, you have Blue Sky, Orange Sun, Green Grass, Brown Dirt, and Slate Rock.

Older Residential phone cabling uses four uniquely colored conductors. This cable is called quad. It consists of Green, Red, Black, and Yellow. On occasion White and Blue are also included.

White / Orange Pair 2 Tip Black
Orange / White Pair 2 Ring Yellow

White / Green Pair 3 Tip White
Green / White Pair 3 Ring Blue


Now, if you are using a 25 pair cable, those colors above are grouped with another set. These colors replace the color white in the normal color code.

So, Pair 6 would be Red/Blue and Blue/Red.
Pair 18 would be Yellow/Green and Green/Yellow.

If you are using a 125 pair cable, There are five 25 pair bundles. Each of these bundles are wraped in a binder string of either Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, or Slate. You would use the same principal above to figure out the individual numbers.

Pair 26 would be Orange Binder, White/Blue Tip, with a Blue/White Ring.
Pair 82 would be Green Binder, Red/Orange Tip, with a Orange/Red Ring.
